Make them great

I recently was thinking about a lesson I had a mentor share with me that has profoundly impacted how I look at what I do as a leader and how I view my role in working with those that I work with. This lesson was the idea of "Make your people so great that they can work anywhere and make the culture so good they don't want to." When I have talked to younger supervisors about this idea and how I have see it play out over the years, many have asked whether it is the same idea as "people don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad bosses." Similar idea, but radically different approach and different feel for those working for the leader. One is YOU trying not to be a bad boss, thus the focus is on you and your perception of what is good or bad. This is often not the same perception as those you lead because we (myself included) tend to not be very honest with ourselves and think we are much better than others might believe. If you look at building the people, you take that self assessment out and your are working towards helping each individual become their best and building a culture that everyone wants to be part of. This subtle shift in mindset, away from YOU to them, removes the ego and shifts you to focusing on them. The results will speak for themselves.
There is sometimes the fear in some leaders (weak ones, in my opinion) that helping people transform themselves to such a high level will mean they will go somewhere else. Possible, but in my experience, if you genuinely create the excellent culture, they will stay. If they do leave, take credit for helping them become something that allows them to go where they want to be. You should be proud you helped them and made it possibly for them. After all, a good leader is gives and builds, the effort will be returned some day. You can never lead with idea that you should always get a benefit.
